Cradle of Hindustani Classical Music

Prayagraj has long been an important center for Hindustani classical music. It was home to legendary musicians and has nurtured several gharanas (musical lineages). Some of the most prominent classical musicians of the 20th century, including Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Allah Rakha, Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Pandit  Chunnu Lal Mishra have links to the musical ethos of this region.

Prayag Sangeet Samiti

One of the oldest and most prestigious music institutions in India, Prayag Sangeet Samiti, is located in Allahabad. Established in 1926, it has played a pivotal role in formalizing the study of Indian classical music and dance. Thousands of students across India appear for its music exams every year.

Allahabad hosts numerous cultural and musical events, especially during: Magh Mela and Kumbh Mela, where devotional and folk music performances take place by the riverside. Prayag Sangeet Samaroh, which brings together top classical performers from across the country.

Allahabad was the birthplace or home to several legends. Some notable personalities include Suryakant Tripathi Nirala, Akbar Allahabadi, Sumitra Nandan Pant, Subhadara Kumari Chauhan and Harivansh Rai Bachchan, as well as Hindustani vocalist Janki Bai, Hariprasad Chaurasia & Bholanath Prasanna – Classical Flautist
